Wireless at WARP speed →
“Nothing kills innovation like having to reinvent the wheel. Imagine how dull your diet would be if you had to build a new stove and hammer out a few cooking pots every time you wanted to test a new recipe. Until just a couple of years ago, electronics researchers testing new high-speed wireless technologies faced just this sort of problem; they had to build every test system completely from...

cool beans!~ A newly developed mathematical model that figures out the best strategy to win the popular board game CLUE© could some day help robot mine sweepers navigate strange surroundings to find hidden explosives. … Ferrari, who also directs Duke’s Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Controls (http://fred.mems.duke.edu/), specializes in developing systems that attempt to mimic...

chief information officer
i would love to see a position like this instituted by the current administration.  no, this pos is not about tech, it’s about data.  where to find it, how to mine it.  with enough machine-farmed, human-interpreted data, and a smidge of creativity, the .govs might actually be able to perform wonders.  seriously.

The Age of Mass Intelligence →
We’ve all heard about dumbing down. But there is plenty of evidence that the opposite is also true. Is this, in fact, the age of mass intelligence?

Conversations for a Smarter Planet: Smarter Money... →
Without question, the replacement of physical money with electronic money—and the spectrum of financial innovations that have accompanied it—have helped the world’s economy grow and prosper. They have also helped many more people around the world to join the middle class. But our technical and management systems haven’t kept pace. They couldn’t provide warning signals of risk...

audacity
i would love to get my hands on the demographic data behind the unemployment stats, start building micro-industries out of the skill sets observed to serve targeted niches, answering need and providing stimulus, number one on the list would be healing in the wake of katrina, we could put a number of engineers, architects, carpenters, etc.,to work, have the audacity to ask people to uproot...

suffering from inauguration overload
the media frenzy has nearly driven me to cynicism.  i’m tuning in for the deal and then out, skipping all the pre-game, post-game analysis thank you. on the bright side, i do feel my enthusiasm returning.  tomorrow is also tinkering with machines day!  up to my eyeballs in library books on functional analysis and qm and em and linear algebra oh my.  am sneaking up sideways on relativity.

Energy-Efficient Water Purification  →
yay!~ Yale doctoral student Robert McGinnis and his advisor Menachem Elimelech, Chair of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, have designed systems that harness the power of osmosis to harvest freshwater from non-potable sources, including seawater and generate electricity from low-temperature heat sources, such as waste heat from conventional power plants.”

reading list
quantum mechanics.  it’s funny how some things are like brick walls until the time is right. my favorite title thus far: electrochemistry: theoretical foundations, quantum and statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, the solid state. atoms to quarks has helped with the intuitional bits, providing a framework on which really interesting questions arise, questions about imagination and...

murakami today, kafka on the shore.  in fact, i got to such a point in the book that it became nearly impossible to put down.  didn’t touched a tech book all afternoon. there’s such a soothing, dream-like quality to his writing; the voice fits so snugly within/next to the part of my soul which derives comfort from such things.  it’s nice. it allows the subject matter to be...

generations
while doing a bit of ‘net ‘search inspired by dr. jay’s post, i realized i’d conflated boomers and seniors. so i did some wikiing and see that unbeknownst to (or forgotten by) me, there’s a whole ‘nother generational-type thing sandwiched between me gen x and the boomers.  generation jones.  that’s the demographic into which we might place our...

iminlikewithyou: We have a new office on Bleeker and Lafayette!!! We haven’t moved in yet, so imagine it without the glengarry desks and some totally sweet furniture in its place. It features a kitchen and a bathroom with a shower! Its about 4 times the size of our current dungeon. We’re going to have a party when we move in on Feb 1st! Who wants to come? nice!  & congrats! if i...

Demographics of Internet Users →
jayparkinsonmd: I can’t imagine living without this internet thing…and more and more people are feeling the same way. Now 41% of people over the age of 65? And Susannah just announced on Twitter that 31% of people age 71+ are now online. Is there a social network for senior citizens yet? If not, I’m going to jump on that. Anyone want to build it with me? i would if i didn’t have too...

it’s seems that particular circumstances in current, or recent enough to be current, ….. (those moments which layer up and stick to the mind, creating a particular narrative that demands to be followed), are turning my thoughts to a portion (or perhaps the whole enchilada) of artifacts / foundations (?), of our intellectual (and at least western) cognitive histories, yes, are asking me...

iminlikewithyou: We are growing at 9% day over day. By any other standard, this is pretty awesome. However, in order to increase this, we are going to need more people in this world. So go ahead and do me a solid: make some babies. If you’re anything like the kids in my junior high school, you shouldn’t have a problem figuring it out. Thanks! but make sure you use condoms.  safe sex and all...

it’s not been as difficult as i thought it might.  i’m not the same person i was a year ago, heck, even a week ago.  something about finding one’s “north” and everything about reconnecting with friends after four and a half years in new york city. i love that particular metropolis with most of my heart, but it will take a bit of one’s soul and twist it...

Improving fluid intelligence - National Academy of... →
ABSTRACT Fluid intelligence (Gf) refers to the ability to reason and to solve new problems independently of previously acquired knowledge. Gf is critical for a wide variety of cognitive tasks, and it is considered one of the most important factors in learning. Moreover, Gf is closely related to professional and educational success, especially in complex and demanding environments. Although...

ringing in *2009*
it’s almost not worth speaking about, but only in the sense that words might ruin it. being somewhat socially autistic, i find i don’t enjoy attending parties as well as i might were i blessed with a mind that went a bit slower than ten billion miles a second.  last night, despite a couple of tiny ‘wtf’ moments, was a dream.  & a good one! it began with a visit to...
